Charging for plastic bags at supermarkets isn't effective way to encourage recycling, says our reader. @GreenDrinksSG

WHILE I agree with Ms Catherine Ho Shull ('Time to say a firm 'no' to plastic bags'; Tuesday) that we should reduce the use of plastic bags and embrace the 3Rs of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, I disagree that NTUC FairPrice should charge for plastic bags to encourage shoppers to bring their own bags. I visit FairPrice often and always request plastic bags for my groceries, because I need them for other purposes. I put my rubbish in these plastic bags before throwing them into the refuse chute. This prevents the infestation of pests such as cockroaches and rodents in the refuse chute, and also makes the rubbish collector's job much easier. Singaporeans should be taught to make use of the plastic bags they collect from stores. Even if FairPrice doesn't give out plastic bags, I will still buy them.
