CONGESTION on public transport and the roads is not necessarily a result of an overpopulation of cars or people. It can also result from too many people heading in the same direction at the same time. The authorities involved in urban planning need to realise that if they put all new housing in the far corners of Singapore and offices in the centre of the city, a crunch is inevitable during peak hours. This problem can be aggravated by common starting times in offices and schools. More effort needs to be made to stagger working times and allow people to travel shorter distances to arrive at their destinations. If possible, we should have businesses and offices located in new towns in the four corners of Singapore, so that the young working population with newly acquired property are less likely to travel from one end of the island to the other on a daily basis and add to t...
