4 schools have closed their cheerleading clubs, for reasons ranging from safety concerns to cost

SINGAPORE - The heart-pumping music and glittery outfits of one co-curricular activity (CCA) in schools here seem to be beating softer and becoming less shiny these days. While cheerleading may still be popular among students, the sport is taking a slight tumble in schools. MediaCorp has learnt that at least four schools have closed their cheerleading clubs, for reasons ranging from safety concerns to cost. At Victoria Junior College, which stopped the CCA last year, the difficulty was in finding qualified coaches who were able to provide training at a higher level as students began to experiment with more physically demanding routines, said its principal Mr Chan Poh Meng. He said the school had consulted students and that "closure of any CCA at VJC, after careful consideration, is a last resort".
