Support for Japan PM falls to new low - Channel News Asia

TOKYO: Public support for Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan's cabinet has dropped below 20 per cent, the lowest figure since he took office in June, according to an opinion poll released on Saturday. The low of 19.9 per cent was a 12.3-percentage-point dip from the previous poll, in January, Kyodo News said in its survey, as pressure mounts on Kan to get to grips with the country's flagging economy. The last time the approval rate for any cabinet has sunk below 20 per cent in a Kyodo News survey was just before Kan's predecessor, Yukio Hatoyama, resigned last June, when the rate was 19.1 per cent, Kyodo said. The disapproval rating for the current cabinet surged to 63.4 per cent from 53.9 per cent mainly due to what is seen as lack of leadership on the part of Kan, president of the ruling Democratic Party of Japan.
