Table Tennis: Wang Yuegu falls to Li Xiaoxia in Women's World Cup

SINGAPORE: The quarter-finals for the Volkswagen 2011 Women's World Cup were played on Saturday. World number one Li Xiaoxia from China was made to work, but she still prevailed against her Singapore opponent, Wang Yuegu. World number nine Wang Yuegu had the home crowd behind her at the Toa Payoh Sports Hall, and lifted by the support, she took the first two sets. However, the Chinese ace stepped up a gear and was soon ahead. She sealed the match 4-2 and booked her spot in Sunday's semi-finals. Despite the loss, it was a valiant effort by Wang, who expected the Chinese to come back strong. Wang said: "Today I played (quite well)... But (I was up) 2-0 and I lost 2-4, (so) I am a little bit sad." In another quarter-final, China's world number two Ding Ning made easy work of her Korean rival, Kim Kyung Ah, winning 4-0.
