Bangkok floodwaters 'may recede next week'

BANGKOK - Receding floodwaters north of Bangkok have reduced the threat to the Thai capital, the Prime Minister said yesterday, but high tides in the Gulf of Thailand will still test the city's flood defences. "If things go on like this, we expect floodwater in Bangkok to recede within the first week of November," Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said on national television. Bangkok residents watched the city's dikes and sandbag barriers warily as the high tide pushing up the Chao Phraya River from the Gulf of Thailand peaked just after 9am. They had been told for more than a week that yesterday's tide would be the greatest test of the capital's flood defences since the northern deluge first approached Bangkok more than three weeks ago.
