Table Tennis: Ding Ning wins Women's World Cup

SINGAPORE: It was an upset of sorts when world number one Li Xiaoxia of China was beaten by her team-mate in the final of the Volkswagen 2011 Women's World Cup. World number two Ding Ning upstaged Li 11-9, 11-5, 7-11, 14-12, 11-9 at the Toa Payoh Sports Hall on Sunday to clinch the title. Ding also goes home with US$45,000 winner's cheque while Li pockets US$25,000. Ding said: "I feel very happy winning......because at such a tough competition every opponent is very strong. Irrespective of the fact that she (Li Xiaoxia) is world number one, me being the champion makes me happy." For host Singapore, it was disappointing as its top player Feng Tianwei narrowly missed a podium finish, ending the campaign in 4th place after losing to Hong Kong's Tie Yana in the bronze-medal match.
