Training centre to train legal eagles from region: ... officials and justice advocates from developing regional

SINGAPORE - The Republic will serve as a base to train lawyers, officials and justice advocates from developing regional countries to boost their skills and the know-how in providing legal aid to their citizens. The Justice Training Centre in Singapore, which will conduct the training, was launched on Monday by the International Bridges to Justice (IBJ), a non-government organisation founded in 2001. American lawyer Karen Tse was inspired to establish the organisation after a visit to Cambodia back in 1994 to train a group of public defenders. While there, she came across a 12-year-old boy who had been tortured and denied access to counsel. Like several others in the region, he was as victim of "broken down legal systems", she said.
