I REFER to the report "Harmful chemicals in baby shampoo" (Nov 2). While it refers to doubtful data put forward by an association in the United States, it may lead readers to believe that Singapore's cosmetic industry uses unsafe chemicals in products placed on the market here. Cosmetic products are regulated in the Association of South East Asian Nations by the Asean Cosmetic Directive, one of the few regulations in the world that is science-based, putting the emphasis on product safety. The Health Sciences Authority is in charge of controlling products placed on the market here, and the industry in Singapore - manufacturers, importers and distributors - is making sure all its products comply with the regulations. Quaternium-15, the preservative mentioned in the report, is an approved preservative. It can be used up to 0.2 per cent in cosmetic products (up to 0.1 per cent...
