Median monthly household income rose to $5,000 last year but gap widens

SINGAPORE - As median household incomes grew marginally last year - after adjusting for inflation - compared to recession-hit 2009, the income gap also rose for the first time in three years. Overall, all income groups experienced more than three per cent growth in household income from work, "in tandem with strong economic growth", the Department of Statistics said yesterday. Its study of household income trends among Singapore residents showed that the median monthly household income has increased by 3.1-per-cent - or $150 - to $5,000 last year, compared to 2009. After taking inflation into account, the increase was 0.3 per cent. For households with at least one working person, median monthly income from work increased by 5.7 per cent in nominal terms and 2.8 per cent in real terms.
