About 0.8% of Primary 1 students every year are exempted from taking mother tongue subjects due to learning difficulties

It is recommended that children with dyslexia focus on one language, says Dr Jennifer Kiing, a consultant in the Child Development Unit at the University Children's Medical Institute, NUH. DIAGNOSIS The MOE grants MTL exemption "when the student has been diagnosed as having a severe learning disability, which will adversely affect his or her learning and performance in examinations". Applications for MTL exemption on grounds of dyslexia must be supported by a medical diagnosis.
