FRANCE wants to push ahead with the transition to a multi-currency global financial system, its Economy Minister said on Monday. Ms Christine Lagarde told a news conference in Paris ahead of a meeting of G-20 finance ministers this weekend that the world had to move from the "non-monetary system" it now has to one based on "several international currencies". The meeting, which will be the first to be held under France's leadership, is also expected to feature discussions on issues such as creating a system to oversee international capital flows and global economic imbalances. Singapore, Ethiopia, Spain, the United Arab Emirates and Equatorial Guinea are the five countries outside the G-20 that have been invited to attend the summit.
