NYT’s China conundrum and the Singapore perspective #singapore

I have many friends teaching in neighbourhood schools. I heard from them that the secondary two streaming examination often result in the best pure science class being usually taken up by the PRC students, about one-quarter by the Indonesian students and the remaining by Singaporeans. The PRC students are generally older and more hardworking but they are weaker in English. The better classes tend to have more foreigners. One possible reason is because they are more motivated as the school fees they have to pay are much higher. The tail-end classes are normally filled with local and less motivated locals. In the quest by the Principals to achieve value-addedness for their graduating pupils, one strategy adopted by such schools is to channel the best teaching resources to the better classes which also tend to be smaller.
