I APPLAUD NTUC FairPrice for providing an additional 5-per-cent discount on 500 essential household items, as part of its proactive effort to grapple with the rising inflation in Singapore (Feb 15). This will cost the organisation $2.3 million over the next few months. This is a good example of the self-help concept: We often hear requests for the Government to help financially, surprisingly sometimes even from Members of Parliament. We should, however, all re-create that gotong-royong (self-help) village culture and depend on the Government only to kick-start and monitor the situation. If all else fails, then approach the Government for help. It surely hurts when an organisation gets hit with a $2.3-million bill, and NTUC FairPrice cannot continue like this for a long time without adversely affecting its reserves.
