December 2010 Retail Sales Post 1.8% Rise On-Year: Catering trade turnover up 7.9% from 12 months ago.

It was a jolly end to the year for retailers in December 2010 as they raked in 1.8% more in sales compared to a year ago. The grins got wider for non-motor vehicle retailers as, excluding motor vehicles, retail sales expanded 8.6% on-year. According to the Singapore Department of Statistics’ Retail and Catering Trade Indices December 2010 , sectors with double-digit growths on-year include: wearing apparel and footwear (+14.2%) furniture and household equipment (+13.6%) medical goods and toiletries (+11.6%) In contrast, motor vehicle sales plummeted 25.1% from a year ago – the only sector with negative sales. Compared to November 2010, most sectors saw a 0.4% - 9.2% growth in retail sales. Supermarkets (-0.7%) and department stores (-2.9%) bucked the trend with a lower turnover on-month.
