Indonesia pins sporting hopes on SEA Games

JAKARTA: Indonesia believes this 26th Southeast Asian Games will mark the country's return to sporting supremacy in the region. Indonesia's Youth and Sports Minster said the country has passed its growing pains from its political and economic reform - and is now primed to recapture sporting glory. Not many were convinced just a month ago if Indonesia was ready to host the 26th SEA Games, to be held in Jakarta and Palembang, South Sumatra. A corruption scandal over the construction of the Games village dealt a major blow to organisers. The building of sports facilities were behind schedule - mainly hampered by slow disbursement of government funds due to bureaucracy. Andi Malarangeng, Indonesia's Youth and Sports Minister, said: "All the state funds have to be accountable and there are procedures on how to disburse the funds. And we have to follow too."
