[CNA] American Kamari Charlton pleads guilty to phone scams

SINGAPORE: American Kamari Kenyada Charlton, 37, has pleaded guilty to five cheating charges involving phone scams in Australia. Calls were made from Singapore-registered numbers to elderly persons in Australia, falsely asking for money to aid needy relatives. Investigations revealed that some of these numbers were registered under Charlton's name. From August 2008 to March 2010, on five different occasions, Charlton had dishonestly received a total of more than $175,800. He has also been charged with overstaying his tourist visa in Singapore. Charlton was arrested on 1 September 2010 at Changi Airport as he was about to leave Singapore. His lawyer told the court on Thursday that Charlton had no knowledge of the scams but was not disputing the facts. 17 other charges are being taken into consideration and he will be sentenced next Monday.
