[ST] Budget 2011: Keep S'pore affordable

THE annual Budget is one of the most anticipated items on the national agenda. Everyone hopes to benefit in some way. Of late, the Government has been proactive in encouraging Singaporeans to have babies, and subsidising, in one way or another, the cost of essential items, housing and utilities to soften inflation's blow. But the sense one gets is that it is far less than what we need. The net result: pain for the average Singaporean. For instance, the tiny pay rises at the workplace and small incentives for making babies pale in comparison to the rising cost of housing, transport, raising a child and health care. So, what do I want, when the Budget is announced today and with a general election looming? I want the Government to keep Singapore affordable. Lower the cost of living and lessen the burden of housing, transport and education. Rather than have pay rises perennia...
