I welcome the Government's move to introduce a data protection law. I suggest that the law should pay particular attention to the following activities: Marketing by calls to mobile phones and marketing of dubious products. Marketing by calls to mobile phones is particularly bad as it is the most intrusive and unwelcome. It should be banned under the new law. The personal mobile phone should be reserved for personal use and legitimate calls. The law should also require the marketing organisation that uses a third-party database to register its marketing materials at a portal run by an authority. This is to ensure the identity of the organisation is known. It will help to reduce the incidence of marketing of dubious products. I recognise that the law will be difficult to enforce, especially for e-mails sent from outside Singapore. However, it is a good idea to make it known ...
