SINGAPORE: Singapore may consider legislation to give police more power to nip youth violence in the bud. This may include power short of detention to prevent youth offenders from associating with each other and from frequenting certain places. Home Affairs and Law Minister K Shanmugam said this was part of a "multi-pronged, multi-party approach" under consideration. He was speaking in an interview in the latest issue of Petir, the bi-monthly People's Action Party (PAP) magazine. He said increased police power may be necessary since many youth offenders do not cross the threshold to be picked up under the Criminal Law Temporary Provisions Act, which allows for suspects of criminal activities to be detained without trial.
