IN THE eternal rivalry between two great Australian cities over, well, just about everything, it seems we might just have a winner. When it comes to dining out, at least. Yes, the undeniable allure of dining in Melbourne is still burning hot like an irresistibly warm fire on a cold winter night. But Sydney has certainly caught up fast, like a bush fire in the height of summer. In fact, out of a total of 503 restaurants around Australia that were awarded with Australian Good Food And Travel Guide's (AGFG) coveted Chefs Hats Awards this year, Sydney had 77 awarded restaurants over Melbourne's 72. Its success is due to a combination of world-class outposts like Japanese contemporary dining Nobu, plus a long list of feted local establishments, including Neil Perry's Rockpool restaurant; Vue de Monde by Shannon Bennett, AGFG's 2007 Chef Of The Year; and, of course, 22-year-old ...
