US criticises China over Internet

WASHINGTON - THE United States on Friday chided China for apparently blocking online access to remarks by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in which she defended Internet freedom around the world. US officials said China appeared to be preventing web searches on Ms Clinton's name after her speech on Tuesday in which she said that countries will pay an economic cost if they suppress online activity. Ms Clinton's spokesman, Philip Crowley, himself took to the Internet to complain, writing on Twitter: 'While China negotiates with (Secretary) Clinton, it is evidently trying to make her disappear from the Internet. 'This is a losing proposition,' Mr Crowley wrote. China tightly regulates Internet searches, with most Chinese unable to find material on politically sensitive topics such as the 1989 crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrations in Tiananmen Square.
