SINGAPORE: Voluntary Welfare Organisations in the long-term care sector said enhanced government support as announced in the Budget Statement, will help reduce their deficits. VWOs which Channel NewsAsia spoke to said the new S$1 billion Community Silver Trust in which the government provides one-to-one matching for donations to VWOs, will give a much needed boost to improving the quality of care services for the elderly. One of the VWOs is St Luke's hospital, which needs about S$15 million to operate annually, faces a deficit of about S$3 million. St Luke's eldercare services also run into a deficit of S$1 million each year. Thus, the additional support extended in this year's budget is welcome.
