Protesters face riot police in Algerian capital

ALGIERS - Riot police clashed with protesters who tried to rally in central Algiers Saturday, raising conflicting reports over the number of injured including an Algerian opposition lawmaker. Tahar Besbas, a deputy of the Rally for Culture and Democracy, was hit in the stomach by a policeman and hit his head on the pavement when he fell, according to party spokesman Mohsen Belabbas. Besbas lost consciousness and was suffering from multiple injuries when he was brought into Mustapha hospital, emergency doctor Rafik Hassani said. "He was really beaten up by police. He was beaten with a truncheon and fell to the ground. There, he was kicked by police," he said, adding Besbas had probably broken a leg. But a spokesman for Algeria's civil protection authority denied that Besbas had been hurt at all. "He had a dizzy spell, certainly because of tiredness and high blood pressure. ...
