A majority of people with mental illness here are not seeking professional help, a survey has found

SINGAPORE - Despite the proliferation of mental health services here, a majority of people with mental illnesses are not seeking professional help. And among those who do, they typically leave it till late. A nationwide mental health study conducted by the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) - the biggest to date - found that only 31.8 per cent of respondents with mental issues are seeking professional help. The top three most prevalent mental conditions were major depressive disorder, alcohol abuse and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). It took an average of four years for someone suffering from depression to seek help. As for alcohol abuse, the gap is even wider at 13 years. The study, which involved more than 6,500 respondents aged 18 and above, also found that the majority of the mental illnesses struck by the age of 29.
