HPB to intensify efforts to teach good eye care habits

SINGAPORE: Some 16 per cent of kindergarten children (aged four to six) are myopic, but preventive education has already proven successful in primary schools in Singapore. "Go outdoors and play!" - that is the message the Health Promotion Board (HPB) is keen to get across to Singaporean children. Spending more time outdoors and less time on the computer could reduce their risk of getting myopia. It is part of the National Myopia Prevention Programme, which began in 2001. One school has taken this message to heart. Rulang Primary School has introduced several programmes to help cultivate good eye care habits among its students. Kavitha Divenaran, a teacher at Rulang Primary School, said: "There's a no handphone policy, and then we have structured computer lab timings whereby we control the timing when pupils use the computer labs.
