Europe urges Libya to stop violence, listen to protesters

BRUSSELS - Europe urged Libya Sunday to stop violently repressing protesters and listen to their demands, despite a Libyan threat to retaliate to criticism by opening the floodgates to illegal immigration. As autocratic regimes in Bahrain and Libya responded to protests with deadly force, and thousands of people rallied for change in Morocco, European Union foreign ministers met for dinner in Brussels to discuss how to handle the reform fever spreading across the Arab world. EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton focused her attention on Libya's veteran ruler Moamer Kadhafi -- urging his regime to open a dialogue with protesters after a crackdown said to have cost hundreds of lives.
