Rising to the top in male-centric Japanany's products made delicious rice.: More and more women are taking on se...

TOKYO: More and more women are taking on senior management positions in large companies and the public service in Japan. The manufacturing sector, though, is generally thought of as having a glass ceiling for women. However, one woman managed to make her way up the corporate ladder and into the boardroom at Japanese manufacturing giant Panasonic. Machiko Miyai joined Matsushita Electric in 1983 which is today known as Panasonic. She joined the rice cooker business unit and her job was to make sure that the company's products made delicious rice. She moved up the ranks through the years, and this April, Machiko became the first woman to join the company's board of directors, making her the highest ranking woman in the company with 80,000 employees worldwide.
