Work-life balance more important than salary: survey

SINGAPORE: Cash, apparently, is not king among Singaporean employees. Finding the right balance between work and family ranks ahead of salary in order of importance, according to a survey released on Tuesday by Ernst & Young. The pilot study by Ernst & Young of 110 public and private sector workers ranked compensation not first, not second, but third, as the key driver for motivation at the workplace. Ernst and Young says Singapore's highly competitive economy places pressures on employees - that puts a premium on this sought-after quality. Mildred Tan, Managing Director of Ernst & Young, said: "Work-life balance would suggest that our workers do work long hours. It would also suggest that they find that doing meaningful work is important to them and being with their families and having a life as it were is equally important."
