Asian equity markets still on uptrend: analysts

SINGAPORE : Asian equity markets are facing near-term uncertainties as political unrest in the Middle East weighs on equities. Central banks in the region are also ramping up their fight against inflation by raising interest rates and tightening bank credit. This has raised investor concern about economic growth, especially in markets such as China and India. However, analysts say valuations are still compelling and the recent sell-off represents good buying opportunities. Oil prices are rising as unrests spilled over from from Tunisia and Egypt to key oil exporters such as Libya and Iran. On Friday, China raised its reserve requirements for banks once again, this time by 50 basis points, in an effort to mop up excess liquidity in the economy.
