Gambler wife torched journalist over money, say Vietnam police

Police said yesterday the wife of a Vietnamese journalist confessed to dousing him in petrol and torching him in his sleep - a killing his colleagues initially feared was revenge for his investigative reporting. International media rights groups were outraged at the attack after initial reports said someone broke into the bedroom through a window to set fire to Mr Le Hoang Hung, 50. But Mr Le's wife, Tran Thi Thuy Lieu, 40, admitted on Sunday that she killed her husband, said the chief police investigator in the southern Long An province. State media also cited the police as saying the suspect gambled frequently and had argued with her husband over money. Mr Le died on Jan 29 after 10 days of treatment for third-degree burns. AP
