There's more to being an usher at the Esplanade than just showing you to your seat

CHRIS Chuah has been to over 800 concerts, ballets, plays and musicals since 2002. He's seen Phantom Of The Opera at least 20 times and caught the Dim Sum Dollies' first ever-appearance a couple of times. The catch is that he never sat through most of these. The 50-year-old Chuah is an usher, one of the 300-strong pool of part-timers at The Esplanade and Drama Centre, which the arts centre has been handling since October last year. It's a motley crew of men and women from all walks of life, from working professionals and students to homemakers and retirees, from as young as 17 to as old as 79.
