(CNA|sg) Singapore's maritime security responses put to test in Exercise Northstar

SINGAPORE: Co-ordination among 18 agencies in Singapore was put to the test on Friday at the finale of an ongoing counter-terrorism exercise - Northstar VIII. The exercise at Jurong Island involved some 1,200 people from the public and private sectors. The drill also put Singapore's maritime security plans through its paces during a mock terrorist attack. More than 700 personnel from the army, police and the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), among others, were involved in the exercise, which started on November 10. Agencies had to monitor and respond to a mock terror attack at sea via the National Maritime Sense-making Centre. The scenario involved security forces storming a tanker hijacked by terrorists plotting to use it as a "floating bomb". It may just be a drill, but the threats are no less real.
