Rationale for an extension of smoking prohibition to more public places Smoking is the single largest cause of preventable death in the world. Smoking is also a key risk factor for cancer, heart diseases, stroke and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD), the top causes of death among Singaporeans. Environmental tobacco smoke or second-hand smoke increases the risk of lung cancer by 20-30%, and heart disease by 25-30%. Non-smokers exposed to tobacco smoke also suffer from respiratory diseases such as coughs, colds and shortness of breath. As more than 86% of our adult population are non-smokers, smoking is prohibited in certain public places to protect the health of non-smokers.
