Free stoves to elderly to promote safe cooking: SINGAPORE: A pilot project to ensure the safety of the elderly i...

SINGAPORE: A pilot project to ensure the safety of the elderly in Toa Payoh will be launched Saturday, with 83 under-privileged senior citizens receiving induction heat stoves for cooking. The project funded by Maybank, is an effort to prevent a repeat of an incident in October last year where a leaking gas stove resulted in a fire in an elederly person's flat. The person was killed while three others were hospitalised as a result of the incident. Central Singapore district is home to a large number of seniors, many of whom live alone. Due to their weakened sense of smell and declining memory, the elderly who use gas stoves are vulnerable should they forget to turn off the gas or fail to detect a gas leak. As such, induction cookers are deemed as a safer alternative and Central Singapore CDC says, that if the project is successful, it will be extended to more seniors. The ...
