In our parenting column: How not to fall victim to exam fever (kids, pass this on to your parents)

When my first child sat for his first exam, I had huge expectations of him as I was a tutor. I expected him to achieve Band 1 in all his subjects because the Primary 1 curriculum was the easiest. Besides, I had to prove to my students' parents that I was a good tutor. When his grades did not meet my expectations, I was of course very disappointed. I could not stop worrying. I wondered about how he was going to make it later on in life, if he could not even perform in Primary 1. So I started to pressure him more. I bought more assessment books and even found another tutor for him. All this translated into less playtime for him. Our relationship soured because I was scolding him all the time.
