Malaysia to alter planned public gathering law

KUALA LUMPUR - The Malaysian Cabinet will ease the provisions of a proposed law setting down rules for public assemblies but opposition lawmakers have rejected the changes and are demanding that the Bill be withdrawn from Parliament pending public consultation. Details of the Peaceful Assembly Bill announced last week included a requirement for rally organisers to inform police about their plans 30 days in advance. Lawyers and rights groups said that was more strict than in Myanmar which passed a similar law earlier this week, stipulating that five days' notice is required to hold a protest. Malaysia's de facto Law Minister, Mr Nazri Aziz, said the Cabinet has agreed to make several changes such as reducing the advance notification period to 10 days.
