Malaysian PM defends new protest law

KUALA LUMPUR: Growing public discontent in Malaysia over a controversial bill governing public gatherings has forced the government to ease restrictions imposed under the proposed new law. Prime Minister Najib Razak said the public misread the Peaceful Assembly Bill, and blames the opposition for confusing people. In a bid to stave off public protests, Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak said there'll be a shorter notice period for people intending to hold public gatherings. Under the proposed Peaceful Assembly Bill, organisers of public gatherings have to give police 30 days advance notice. But this will now be shortened to 10 days. Rights groups had earlier criticised the new law as undemocratic. In defence of the bill tabled in parliament last week, Mr Najib said the new law aims to advance the freedom of citizens.
