SHIZUOKA, Japan : February 23 has been designated Mt Fuji Day in Japan. The almost perfectly shaped volcano is a national icon, attracting hordes of tourists to Shizuoka Prefecture every year. But it seems that is not enough. Many schools in Japan's Shizuoka Prefecture close on February 23. There are also free admissions to various public facilities and parks. Visitors may even receive an extra perk on this day. Mt Fuji, Japan's highest peak, stands at 3,776 metres high and on the border between Shizuoka and Yamanashi Prefectures. As to why February 23 was chosen to mark Mt Fuji Day - it is because Mt Fuji or Fuji san in Japanese sounds like the numbers 2, 2, 3 - giving rise to the chosen date.
