4.7-magnitude quake hits Manila

MANILA - The Philippine capital and other parts of Luzon island - including Cavite, Mindoro and Pampanga - were rocked by an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.7 yesterday morning but there were no reports of damage. According to the United States Geological Survey, its epicentre was 65km southwest of Manila at a depth of 137km. "While this was moderately strong, the depth was quite deep," said Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology director Renato Solidum. "It had to travel more than 100km upwards and, when it reached ground, the energy was not that strong," he added. The institute said it was not expecting aftershocks.
