RSS Archer was declared operational on Friday, more than two years after it was first launched in Sweden. The vessel and its submariners then underwent sea trials there before sailing back to Singapore in August. The second Archer-class submarine, RSS Swordsman, is still in Sweden undergoing sea trials. On Friday, Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen declared RSS Archer a warship of the Republic of Singapore Navy, amidst sleeting rain at Changi Naval Base. He noted that the Archer-class submarines, fitted with the Air Independent Propulsion and advanced sonar systems, are stealthier than their predecessors, the ageing Challenger-class submarines.
