Hi-P International in talks to resolve protest

SINGAPORE: Singapore electronics firm Hi-P International said it is in discussion with workers and relevant authorities to resolve the ongoing protest in its Shanghai plant. In a stock exchange filing, Hi-P clarified that only 200 workers were involved in the strike that started in its Shanghai plant on the morning of November 30. That is significantly lower than the 1,000 striking workers reported by China Labour Watch on December 1. Hi-P also said it knew of no injury sustained by any of the protesters. Reports said strikers have clashed with Shanghai police while protesting against what they believe as unjust lay-offs. Hi-P, an Apple and Hewlett Packard supplier, is moving from Jinqiao to a new plant in Nanhui when its lease expires in April 2012.
