Yasmin Ziqin Mohamed – a name which transcends race

It is that time of the year again. The 2011 PSLE results have been released and a new crop of top students unveiled. Amid the congratulations and inevitable disappointments, an issue caught my eye. This has troubled me for some time but as each year goes by, I call its relevance to question more and more. Every year, in every major statewide exam, the top student of each race is identified and announced. While I salute each of their achievements, I wonder if it is necessary to keep up with this practice. We are all Singaporeans and each student’s achievement is commendable, regardless of race. Why not just list the top five or ten students by virtue of merit? In a system which prides itself on being a meritocracy, that would seem the most sensible way of honouring the students who have done well.
