HSBC raises over 1.25b in renminbi deposits

SINGAPORE: HSBC in Singapore has raised over 1.25 billion in renminbi deposits since the bank launched its suite of renminbi savings and time deposit accounts in January this year. HSBC Global Research estimated that more than half of China's trade flows with emerging market countries, which account for the bulk of China's trade, could be settled in renminbi within three to five years from less than three per cent currently. That would mean that nearly two trillion US dollars worth of trade flows could be settled in renminbi annually. By 2015, HSBC Global Research expects more than half of China's total trade flows to be settled in renminbi, making it one of the top three global trading currencies. HSBC said the strong renminbi deposit momentum in Singapore mirrors the growth of the Bank's renminbi portfolio in Hong Kong. At the end of last year, HSBC's year on year growth...
