Counting down to the General Election

SINGAPORE: The Electoral Boundaries Review Committee report was released on Thursday, a clear sign the General Election is around the corner. The Government has accepted the electoral boundary changes recommended by the report and the next key event to look out for would be the dissolution of Parliament which can happen anytime from now. There is no legal requirement for Parliament to be dissolved within a certain time frame after the release of the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee Report. From past elections, the timeline was anything between five months and just 17 days. Once Parliament is dissolved, the General Election must take place within three months. First, the President has to issue the writ of Election to the Returning Officer. The Returning Officer then issues the Notice of Election. Nomination Day takes place at least five days to a month, after the writ ...
