GE: Electoral boundary changes should help contesting parties: PM Lee

SINGAPORE: Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said the changes to Singapore's electoral map should lower the hurdle for parties intending to contest the elections. He said the changes made known by the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee on February 24 have demarcated new constituency boundaries in accordance with the guidelines which he announced in Parliament in May 2009. Mr Lee said the average size of Group Representation Constituencies (GRCs) has been brought down to five, while the number of six-member GRCs has been reduced and the number of Single Member Constituencies increased to 12. "Many incumbent MPs will be affected by the boundary changes. Whichever way the boundaries are drawn, PAP MPs and candidates will do their best to serve the voters, and to win their support in the next elections," said Mr Lee. Mr Lee made these comments in response to media queries.
