The report "English entry test for maids to be scrapped" (Dec 5) is good news for both employers and foreign domestic workers. It is better to attach greater importance to stress management, as a maid needs some time to adapt to a new environment, our culture and our individual expectations. This helps to minimise any trouble that usually crops up during the initial period. One aspect that must not be overlooked is safety. Employers and the relevant agencies must highlight to maids the accident risks in some household chores. Past untoward incidents involving maids should serve as a good safety lesson. Understanding the English Language is best left to the maid and her employer, as language and dialect skills can be acquired over time. Perhaps, it will be helpful if employers also learn to understand their maids' mother tongue, such as Bahasa Indonesia. Letter from Jeffrey...
