KUALA LUMPUR - MR NIK Nazmi Nik Ahmad was just 19 when he started writing political speeches and policy papers for the opposition Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR). Today, at 29, he is the party's communications director. He was also voted in as a Selangor assemblyman in the 2008 general election, becoming the youngest person in Malaysia to be elected that year. 'I started out in policy work but when I joined the party after graduation, I worked at the grassroots as well - distributing leaflets and hanging banners,' Mr Nik Nazmi said. He may have started out younger than most, but his is a typical beginning for opposition politicians. The opposition, in particular the PKR and to some extent its ally the Democratic Action Party (DAP), has given young talent more room to rise. 'Age has never been particularly important in the PKR.
