Emily of Emerald Hill returns after 10-year hiatus

SINGAPORE: One of Singapore's best-known plays, Emily of Emerald Hill, is making a comeback. Theatre company W!LD Rice is bringing back the drama after a hiatus of 10 years. Two hours is how long it takes to transform theatre actor Ivan Heng to Emily of Emerald Hill. It is an elaborate transformation, with sarong kebayas and nyonya shoes customised specially for the play all the way from Malacca. To fit into his role, Ivan had to lose some 9 kilogrammes. "I am wearing a corset, I'm wearing high heeled, wigs, I have got tonnes of jewellery, it's quite a heavy undertaking...Emily is traditionally staged with 2 kebayas, one when she's young, one when she's old. In our staging, we decided to put her in western ball gown, put her in a cheongsam, put her in a fur coat," said Ivan. Emily of Emerald Hill was W!LD Rice's very first production when the company started 10 years ago. ...
