Gaddafi apparently no longer in control: Italy PM

ROME: Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi appears to be no longer in control of the situation in his country, Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said at a political rally in Rome on Saturday. "It seems that effectively Gaddafi no longer controls the situation in Libya... If we can all come to an agreement, we can end this bloodbath and support the Libyan people," Berlusconi said. Referring to North Africa as a whole after revolts in Egypt and Tunisia, he added: "Those peoples could come closer to democracy but we could be faced with dangerous centres of Islamic fundamentalism." Berlusconi came under heavy criticism in Italy earlier this week for his tardiness in condemning Gaddafi's bloody crackdown against protests. Italy is Libya's former colonial ruler and has become its top trade partner after Rome and Tripoli signed a friendship treaty in 2008. Opposition politicians ...
